Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents one of the most common chronic noncommunicable degenerative diseases and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, new studies have shown that extra virgin olive oil, which is particularly rich in polyphenols, may play a crucial role in protecting and improving kidney function. We find out the outcomes of research conducted by Tor Vergata University in Rome, which examined the effects of extra virgin olive oil on kidney well-being and its impact on overall health.

The Mediterranean diet and extra virgin olive oil

The Mediterranean diet is known for its many health benefits, and extra virgin olive oil is a key element of this diet. Rich in vegetable fats and polyphenols, extra virgin olive oil has received attention for its positive effects on cardiac and metabolic health. However, the latest studies suggest that its potential benefit could extend to renal health as well.

Tor Vergata University of Rome conducted a study of 40 nephropathic patients, evaluating the effects of two different types of extra virgin olive oil, characterized by high (Synergy) and medium (Luxolio) minor polar compound (MPC) content. Participants took 40 mL of extra virgin olive oil daily for 9 weeks.

Improvements in kidney function and beyond

The results of the study were surprising. Significant improvements in biomarkers of renal function, such as estimated glomerular filtration rate, albuminuria, azotemia, and uric acid, were observed during the period of extra virgin olive oil intake. In addition, there were also improvements in lipid profile, oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters, such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein. The participants’ body composition showed positive improvements.

Persistence of beneficial effects

An interesting aspect of the study was the wash-out period, which is two months after the end of dietary supplementation (T2). The researchers noted that patients who took Synergy oil, which is characterized by a high content of polar minor compounds, maintained the healthful effects of extra virgin olive oil over time, particularly with regard to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Role of MPCs in extra virgin olive oil

MPCs present in extra virgin olive oil appear to be the main players in these benefits. These minor polar compounds exert a protective action against the kidney, helping to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. These findings are particularly significant for nephropathic patients, as protection and improvement of renal function can have a positive impact on their overall health and prevention of cardiovascular complications.

Conclusions

Extra virgin olive oil rich in polyphenols is confirmed as a valuable ally for kidney health. Supplementing the diet with 40 milliliters of excellent extra virgin olive oil daily for 9 weeks has been shown to lead to significant improvements in kidney function, body composition, oxidative stress and inflammatory status. The beneficial effects persist over time, especially when an oil with a high content of polar minor compounds is chosen.

As always, it is advisable to consult a health professional before making any significant changes to your diet or eating regimen, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions.
